Organic Photovoltaics / Commercialization Prospects

In the field of Organic Photovoltaics, an online survey is conducted from February 21 to April 21 2013. In 8 weeks, 107 respondents from 70 regions, 26 countries answered the 65-question survey about Excellence in OPV research, Regional (sub-national) Networking, International Cooperation, Commercialization Prospects, and Policy and Programmes in the field of OPV.

Below we highlight some results

Competition from Crystalline Si and thin film

69.1% of the respondents think that the cost improvements achieved in Crystalline Si and thin film will possibly affect commercialisation of OPV negatively (Yes: 35.5%, Probably: 33.6%, No: 24.3%, Don't Know: 6.5%). (Q41)

Barriers to commercialization

The main barrier for commercialization of OPV is considered as technical by 69% and economic by 30% of respondents. (Q42)

First market applications

• Building-Integrated PV,
• Portable Power/Electronics Chargers,
• Textiles/Enhanced Clothing
are seen as the first markets applications of OPV. (Q43)

56% of the respondents expect commercialization till 2025. (7% already has commercial value; 21% in the next 4 years; 28%, between 2016-2025). (Q44)

Expectations about success

Respondents who think that companies in their country will be relatively successful innovators in the field of OPV in the next ten years are 47%. (Q49)


80% of respondents indicate that their research team made discoveries which were not patented. (Q15) 35% say that high cost of obtaining a patent is the reason for not applying for a patent, 29% say that their organization doesn't have a policy of patenting. (Q16)

Europe vs ROW and China

Possibilities for commercialization in Europe are considered as just as good as in the best countries outside Europe by 64%. (Q45) For China, possibilities for commercialization are evaluated as just as good as in the best countries outside China by 45%. (Q46)

The most successful country

The country which is likely to be most successful in commercializing OPV inventions is seen as the US (28.1%) followed by Germany 23%. China (11.5%) is the third country in this category. (Q47)

Factors responsible for commercial success

Main factors responsible for successful commercialization of OPV applications are seen as Leading edge research (24%), national government support (20%), and Commercially driven research (18%). Q48)

Markets for OPV products

Respondents indicate that European markets (26%) and U.S. (24%) markets are most likely to be targeted by their OPV applications. They are followed by markets of BRICS Countries (19%) and Global markets (17%). (Q50)


The best known OPV Research Spin-offs is Heliatek, Dresden, Germany followed by Konarka, Solarmer, Eight19, Plextronics, SolOrganic, Next Energy Technologies, C-Voltaics. (Q51)
